Students from The University of Texas at Austin

Course Registration and Course Credit

Students of The University of Texas at Austin register for all Semester in Los Angeles courses online, via UT Direct. Semester in Los Angeles courses are listed in the UT course catalog, but are restricted to students who are enrolled in the program.

Course Registration for Spring 2010

All undergraduate participants in the Semester in Los Angeles Program are required to register for 12 credit hours during fall or spring semester, or 9 credit hours over summer semester. For undergraduate students, the flat rate tuition is the same for 12 or more hours in any given long semester, so students may enroll in an additional course at no additional expense. Students may also audit an additional academic course beyond the required 12 hours during a long semester, by consent of the instructor. All participants are required to register for their own courses.

All undergraduate participants are required to enroll in the Semester in Los Angeles internship course (which is cross-listed as COM350L or RTF330L). Note: Students in Advertising and Public Relations should contact the internship coordinator in the Advertising Department as early as possible in their planning process regarding the possibility of registering for the required Advertising/Public Relations internship course while in LA, in place of the COM350L course (students are required to follow the application process stipulated by the Department of Advertising and Public Relations).

For most students at The University of Texas at Austin, courses will count as electives toward degree requirements. Students in the Department of Radio-TV-Film can elect to have Semester in Los Angeles courses meet RTF requirements, Communication elective or general elective requirements. Other students in the College of Communication will have the courses count toward their degrees as Communication electives outside of their major or as general electives.

College of Communication students may also request a waiver to exceed the credit hour limit for their major (RTF students only) or their total communication credit hour limit. Each student’s situation is unique, so students should consult their academic advisor to determine their options, and learn about policies that may impact their participation, such as concurrent enrollment, graduation, etc. Taking the time to plan in advance will contribute to a successful experience in the Semester in Los Angeles Program.

Graduate students

Graduate students are required to register for 9 hours during a fall or spring semester, or 6 hours over a summer semester. Please consult your graduate adviser about your enrollment in the program. For RTF students, please contact Stephanie Crouch (swcrouch@austin.utexas.edu) for specific course registration information prior to enrollment in the program.
